Tooth extraction in San José
Dr. Melania Pacheco Pinto, a dentist trained at the University of Costa Rica, does simple tooth extractions at her office in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, San José. Complex surgery is coordinated with a specialist.
What is a simple extraction?
It means removing a tooth that can no longer be saved. It is called simple when the tooth is visible in the mouth and comes out without surgery.
Complex surgery, such as wisdom teeth that have not come in or are badly positioned, is done by a specialist. The doctor examines you and arranges the referral.
When is it recommended?
- A tooth with a cavity too large to repair.
- A tooth that is very loose because of gum disease.
- A tooth that needs to come out before a denture is made.
Whenever possible, the doctor prefers to save the tooth with a filling or a crown.
Before your visit
Tell the doctor which medicines you take, especially blood thinners, and whether you have diabetes, high blood pressure or another condition, or are pregnant.
What happens at the appointment?
- The doctor checks the tooth and takes an X-ray.
- She gives you a local anesthetic.
- She gently loosens the tooth and removes it.
- She places gauze for you to bite on and explains the aftercare.
Does it hurt?
With the anesthetic you should feel pressure, not pain. Afterward there may be some soreness and swelling for a few days. The doctor will tell you what to take for pain.
Aftercare
- Bite on the gauze for as long as the doctor tells you.
- On the first day, do not rinse hard, spit, use a straw or smoke.
- Eat soft, cool or lukewarm food and chew on the other side.
- If the pain gets worse after two or three days, send us a message: it may be dry socket, which is treated at the office.
Afterward: replacing the tooth
Once the gum heals, it is a good idea to fill the gap so neighboring teeth do not shift. The doctor will explain your options, such as dentures.
Price
The doctor's fees follow the minimum fee schedule of the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica, the national dental board (published January 2025). These are the minimum fees for this treatment, in Costa Rican colones:
